Lee’s Crossing

Monthly Newsletter                                                             November 2008

From the President:

Clarification of Paving and Restoration of Decorative Concrete at Front Entrance

In the last month’s newsletter, I wrote that the restoration of the existing decorative concrete by the City would be approximately $45,000. I also indicated we were pursuing putting in, instead, a 12 foot band of pavers and that we thought we could have this done independently for approximately $5,000.

A couple of our residents interpreted my comments as indicating that we could get the same work done elsewhere for $5,000 that the City was offering for $45,000. While this is not the case and was not my intent, I believe a clarification is in order.

The existing decorative concrete covers the width of the street and is approximately 70 feet in length. The City will tear this out because it has severely deteriorated and will replace with asphalt at no cost to Lee’s Crossing. The City would have allowed the restoration of the entire existing concrete, but doing such a large area would have been prohibitively expensive. The Board instead decided that a twelve foot band of red pavers will still afford a distinctive and pleasing look, without spending an amount that would be imprudent. In addition, if the restoration is performed shortly after the excavation of the existing concrete (as the City’s contractor would have to do), the lack of soil compaction would require the pouring of a concrete base and would require a closing of each lane for three days for curing. A respected engineer with the City’s contractor has indicated that if we wait a few months after the asphalt is poured, then natural compaction of the underlying soil will occur and, after removing the 12 foot section of asphalt, pavers can be placed without the need to pour a concrete base and each lane should only be closed for a day.

The Board very much appreciates that the City consented to work with us on this and other matters and believes the City’s pricing was quite fair. We are simply electing to go with a much smaller area of restoration and are choosing to avoid the expense of a poured base. Of course, this project will be done via independent bids and will require City permits.

Budget for 2009

The Board is pleased to propose a budget for 2009 with no increase, despite taking on paving the parking lot, redoing the electrical panels at the clubhouse and other needed improvements. We believe we are still substantially lower in price than the other swim & tennis neighborhoods in the City despite having the best facilities and services. Details are included in this newsletter.

Clubhouse Use

The Clubhouse continues to be used very often and is a great asset for the neighborhood. I understand we even had a wedding there recently. Please remember that the clubhouse is frequently reserved this time of year, especially, so call Melissa Hinchman early for booking to avoid disappointment.

                                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                        Walt Walker

We had a nice turn out for our neighborhood's first wine and cheese social.  We sampled 6 different wines and a wide variety of cheeses.  A big thank you goes to Bette and Jim Foley, Dianne and Terry Ryan, as well as Janet Duncan for their help.   Stephanie Nonner from South City Kitchens in Vinings did a wonderful job with Bette to organize a very tasty and informative evening.  Stephanie donated her time to host this event, so when you visit her restaurant, please be sure to thank her.   With such enthusiasm, I'm sure this will become an annual (if not quarterly) event.

Start getting your plans in place to spend New Year's Eve at our neighborhood party.  It has been incredibly fun every year.  I'm always surprised that more residents don't take advantage of it.  We'll have a new caterer, DJ and dancing (I might even get a few of my ballroom buddies to showcase for us), mock casino night and door prizes.  Of course complimentary wine, beer, mixers (bring your own hard stuff ),  and champagne toast while we watch the ball (or peach) drop on the big screen TV.  I love seeing summer pool pals all dressed up for a great time ringing in the new year together.   Yes, you can pay a little extra for non-residents to come.  So if you have family in town, don't let that stop you all from partaking.

Needed:   ANY RESIDENT THAT HAS GOODIES OR SERVICES OR COUPONS/ GIFT CERTIFICATES TO DONATE FOR NEW YEAR'S EVE DOOR PRIZES, PLEASE CALL JANET DUNCAN @ 770-427-1502   OR EMAIL ME AT janetduncan@bellsouth.net

I Recommend……

If you would like to recommend a business, please send a SHORT testimonial.  Remember to include contact information.

Gordon Pfeiffer would like to recommend Lee's Crossing resident Finnis Jones, owner of Capitol One Exterior Pressure Cleaning, for pressure washing.  Finnis did a great job at a reasonable price for us.  I really feel like I got my money's worth after he cleaned our driveway, walkway, front stoop, and patio area in the back.  He also does air duct cleaning and deck staining.  Call 770-617-2463.

Bette and Jim Foley would like to recommend Kleen Tile Express for cleaning any tile in your home.  We had a great experience with Justin Cook who came to the house and completely cleaned the floors with his equipment.  He uses only biodegradable cleaning solution and a high heat PSI treatment.  It made all the difference in our floors!  Call for reasonable rates:

770-560-6927  (floors, baths, shower and pool/decks).
